It was a mixed bag of results for the club at the winter regional championships in Norwich at the weekend. However, for Oli Maltby it was a fantastic weekend with him achieving his National qualifying time whilst also breaking the county record, both in the 50m backstroke.
Saturday the 7th of December 2013 saw a mixed team of experienced and non-experienced swimmers travelled to Leighton Buzzard to compete in the C Grade Novice Gala. This was an excellent chance for swimmers new to competing to gain experience and see what a competition is like. Modernian Swimmers had some very strong swims from lots of swimmers over all the age groups and we finished the gala in 4th place. 22 out of the 40 events we were 'to fast' for and got disqualified in even though several swimmers were swimming up in the age group above their normal. This is an excellent result for a team that some swimmers were competing in their first ever gala and shows a real potential for the future. The more experienced swimmers of the group were a fantastic help with supporting and encouraging the newer swimmers and the team atmosphere was one of the best I have seen. Well Done to everyone who swam - you should all be very proud.

On Sunday 20th October 19 County Teams made their way to Ponds Forge in Sheffield to compete in the National County Team Championships. The counties are divided into two divisions and Bedfordshire are in Division 2.
For the event the pool at Ponds Forge is divided into two 25m pools with Division 1 swimming at one end and Division 2 at the other. Each event has two heats seeded with all swimmers entry times. The swimmers are set off in Division 1 and then 30 seconds later the Division 2 heats run. The event is loud and fast moving!!
Swimmers from Bedford’s Modernian club have competed in a number of events over the last few weekends, achieving some impressive results so early in the season.
At the Luton Trophy Gala, Modernian competed against Cambridge, Luton, Aylesbury, Watford and Hemel, coming first overall with 231 points.
Rhiannon McCaffray set the pace coming second in her 200m IM and then success followed in many events across the age ranges.
The U11 girls’ team (Tia Wilson, Emma Shoobert, Mea Roberts and Kaelah Lawson) dominated their individual events and came together to finish well ahead in their relays – 17 seconds ahead in the medley relay and seven seconds in freestyle.
A large team of Modernian swimmers also competed at the Leicester Penguins Open Meet with most bagging impressive PBs and county times.
Many swimmers were chasing County Qualifying Times for the first time whilst others were looking to add to those they’ve already achieved.
New CQTs were achieved by Tarek Eldin, Sam Tyler, Jules Caresmel, Stacey Tyler, Eloise Bailey, Jack Tremain, Emma Howitt, Emily Watson, Cerys Wake, Hannah Sharp, Eda Colliver, Joshua Bristow, Ellis Kane, Olivia Cann, Morgan Allan and Orla Keaveney.
Finally last weekend the club sent a strong team to Round 1 of the Arena League in Cambridge. The team gave a great performance coming second to the City of Cambridge.
